I packed up my computer to get ready for my summer school class, left my apartment and opened up the TheCoolJew site on my iPhone, and I saw the latest headline: “BORUCH DAYAN EMMES: HARAV ELYASHIV ZATZAL”. My heart skipped a beat.


I stood there in middle of the sidewalk in the boiling heat and just stared blankly at my phone. I couldn’t believe it. The man it felt like we had just taken for granted that miracles abound around him, that it seemed like he could get through anything and everything and come out okay, was gone. He was given a final summons and beckoning to come join the Heavenly Court, Whose calls he has been screening, ignoring, and avoiding for so long, and he acquiesced. I felt immediately like Tisha B’av had come early.

It would be silly for me to even begin to describe the caliber of this tremendous person, as frankly I am unworthy, and there are better and more qualified people than myself to do that. The Artscroll biography will come out in due time and everyone will be able to read his life’s story. That is not my purpose for writing. I am simply pouring out the pain that I feel at this loss. Just this year alone the amount of Gedolim that have been taken away from us is mind-numbing and utterly terrifying. From the three Rabbonim last summer who were niftar in the same week, to Leiby, to Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel ZT”L, to Rav Sheinberg, it is beginning to feel like we are almost at the end of the rope.

It is said that with the death of a Gadol, one is supposed to take upon himself one of the Middos that the Gadol exemplified as a תיקון for the lack of those Middos that are now missing in the world. I think it is quite obvious that an enormous level of התמדה and דיקדוק במצוות is gone. It would stand to reason that we must now take extra care to bring this קדושה back in to the world so that he could stand up for us and be a מליץ יושר in שמים with tremendous love and pride.
