Matisyahu Going Litvish?

It seems Matisyahu has officially left Chabad for litvish. In a recent twitter post he says,“At the break of day I look for you at sunrise, when the tide comes in I lose my disguise.” He felt the beard was a disguise for his true feelings toward the ltivish movement. With the upcoming holiday of Chanuka his Rosh Yeshiva (not yet identified) told him it would be smart to look neat and clean, which would include to remove his beard. Other people are claiming this is his next move out to door from yiddishkeit but we hope our above explanation is true for his sake! Matis released a statement this morning stating saying "And for those concerned with my naked face, don’t worry…you haven’t seen the last of my facial hair." He is probably hinting that it will be back for sefira and the three weeks. We await for Matis to reveal who will be his Rosh Yeshiva!

On a serious note a known rabbi and educator told popular Chabad website COLlive.com in response:  "I think it should be published and portrayed as his further estrangement from Chabad-Lubavitch. His move to Karlin, is we all knew, was to become less Frum. Here's the continuation. I would emphasize, in the strongest terms, that he is removing himself from observant Jewish Life."

Time will tell....

UPDATE:  Matisyahu posted the following to his twitter - "For all of those who are being awesome, you are awesome. For all those who are confused:today I went to the Mikva and Shul just like yesterday"

But For Now Forever Remember his beard!

An open letter of sorts to Matisyahu

  1. Ehh,,,dont exactly understand this...you claiming that litvishe Jews are less frum than chassidim? You are either shomer mitzvot or not in my book...with or without beard, peyot or black hats.

  3. To Ofer,

Not that they are less frum, but hoping that this could be a sign that he is becoming litvishe rather than going OTD. So sad. I think it is the latter, C"v. However, I am glad that he does not associate with Chabad or any other Chassidus. He is certainly not a good role model. I pray that he does teshuva for himself and for the sake of his wife and children.

  4. The Litvish don't cut their sideburns that high.

  5. No Litvshe Rosh Yeshiva would matir shaving your sideburns off completely.

  6. Good job Yosef. "Mattisyahu" needs to be understood as a person, and I"YH he should come back to his roots... with or without his music. It is a pity he is so public, and this is all open for every yukel to comment. Hopefully his decision (ruach shtus) will not affect our youth!

  12. this is disgusting how people can judge matisyahu. he found hashem who cares how he decides to connect with hashem? who are you to judge a person who has changed millions of people religious or not. he has been there as an example and has clearly always stated his beliefs and his truths. he wants to see where life takes him and this is his journey. i love yidishkeit and i love ahavat yisroel which is the foundation.try loving matisyahu for him and his jewish identity and stop with this loshon horah!

  15. We should give an artistic Member Of The Tribe some space to express himself . Can't the guy experiment to find the Nusach he is most comfortable with? Come on!

There are uncountable modernish Observant/Orthodox Jews indispensable to Klal Yisroael. It is obvious that an artistic performer would feel the need to express himself better without looking like a rabbi?

I feel it is also more humble, and safer for everyone involved for the performer to allow the music to speak for itself rather than having the uniform speak for the performer.

I'm sure that M. realizes the power of celebrity, and it is best for everyone's sake that he NOT be considered by the young masses as some sort of an official Shaliach, nor as a rabbi, nor as (Heaven forbid!) another Shabbatai Zvi or Jacob Frank.

I agree with his first twitter message: he is just a person, and we should give him that simple dignity of not making him a symbol.

I also applaud his second Twitter! Yasher Koach!

I believe his latest transformation could be signs of great humility, sincerity to be Jewish, and good mental health. He probably doesn't feel good enough to be a symbol for any Nusach. He wants to be a Jewish performer. I applaud him.

  18. I think the dude woke up from the dream of identification with form. Looking forward to the music that flows through this upcoming year -- unity, rebirth, eternity in the now, going beyond the dualism of good and bad. His faith is no doubt stronger than ever. Anyone that judges the new look is still caught in believing concepts are truth instead of seeing truth without concepts. Great stuff!

  20. "the point is b what you are and you will b fine". In fact, this is very dumb and selfish. Noone can be happy in his/herself without G-d. The real point is: be righteous, and respect your tradition, which is not an external system, but it should be in yourself, it is an immanent part of you. I am sure he will stay religious, and find the path to stay jewish - there are different traditions, he should choose one and keep it - not only for 10 yrs...

  21. Although I am an outsider, I have to agree with the comment above. G-d would not be necessary if we could just be what we are and be fine. That doesn't work. We are created to have a relationship with G-d.
Personally, I know that faith and my relationship with G-d is something that grows deeper and changes in that respect over time and I think that it must be very hard to be in the spot light regardless of what one is going through. I would not wish that type of scrutiny on anyone!
I agree, "be righteous and respect your tradition, which is not an external system, but it should be in youself.." I think this is what is wrong with a lot of people in various sects and religions.
I think Matisyahu will only fall from the pedestal that we all have put him on and pray that it is no fall from G-d. He's still human. If he is struggling, he should be supported and guided and yes, hopefully brought back.
