EXCLUSIVE: The Untold Beard Story
TheCoolJew.com would like to share a story which we have looked into and confirmed to be true.
As Matis was just becoming frum, he hung around Chabad Rabbi of NYU, Rabbi Dov Yonah Korn. Matis had just finished a high end musical school in Oregon, where he had spent a number of years learning about doing music in a professional manner. At the time he had already started growing a beard.
Budweiser was filming a brand new television commerical and was looking for people with the training and talent that "Mr. Miller" as he was then known, possessed. Having spent years in school in Oregon, Matis was delighted to have the job, and jumped at the opportunity to take the position. Besides for the great offer he would also receive a bonus check of $50,000.

Besides for the great offer he would also receive a bonus check of $50,000.
One day Rabbi Dov Yonah Korn got a frantic call from Matis with a very serious issue. Budweiser very much wanted to hire him and immidetly start filming. Yet they were not willing to take an individual with a bunch of scruff on his face. The beard simply had to go. The deal was simple; no shave no contract. Rabbi Korn, an individual who could very much use a fraction of that money was firm in his response. According to the Bal Shem tov a persons beard brings about Hashem's compassion to give parnasa. Korn though of what a nice donation he might receive as Millers chabad rabbi. What would it hurt just a little shave? He took a second look at the wall and was brought to his right mind as he stared at a photo of The Lubavitcher Rebbe. He didnt blink an eye, "Matis," he said, "I Promise you if you keep your beard and turn this offer down something much better will come." That day Matis listened to Dov Yonah. As hard as the challenge was, he declined that offer. He turned down what was then the greatest chance he could foresee at starting his career. Hashem would repay him in kind.
Within a year of this story Matt Miller (Matisyahu) released what would be his first album together with the help of Jdub records. He was instantly a success for the very reason he lost his past job. People allover the world were fascinated at the idea of a reggae star who was religious and with a beard. What will happen now?

I believe the story is true however Yonah Korn is still a great but poor financially shliach I guess that's the 8 million dollar question people should be asking about Matis?
ReplyDeleteIts a great story and I doubt many could have done the same. Unfortunately, this only makes it more surprising that he would shave if it clearly helped him succeed in life.
ReplyDeleteI think you need to look at the last line and reflect on how terrible that is to say. You be the judge? Who is anyone to judge anyone else?

ReplyDeleteAt each stage of growth there is a choice to be made, a path that leads to the next phase of connection and purpose. To say that the same choice must be made at each junction is just too simple, naive and un-in tune. Even maybe unholy.
