THE FULL STORY OF THECOOLJEW.com:
as told by the Yosef Shidler - Editor for TheCoolJew
The domain name was bought in California on a Laptop in the San Fransisco Airport . It was right around Midnight on December 31st 2005. It used to take a bit of time for a domain to become active and this it became active and working in the early hours of Jan 1st. I was in the city for two weeks running a chanukah camp for many non religious kids. The camp was over over and I was waiting to board a plane back to NYC. . I had been looking for a way to keep in touch with all the kids at the camp. READ MORE IN FULL ARTICLE
This was when facebook was just becoming big. I had the idea to make a system which was like the myspace and would be Jewish and this way I would stay in touch with the kids. On the last days of the camp I told the kids of my plan and we discussed the name for the website. We had many ideas. We really wanted CoolJew.com but it was already taken so it was decided that it would be THECOOLJEW.com. So on the way out of town right before getting on the plane back to New York, I purchased the domain name thecooljew.com. It didn't go live until the next morning Jan 1 2006. When I got back to NY I began working on building a system that would be used to keep in touch. Unfortunately the system that was created didn't kick off to well and the contact with the campers stayed mainly with other means. Thus for a while after the website was purchased it reamin dormant. During Chol Chaomoed Pesach of that year I decided to turn it into a news website just for Jews in Colorado where I was then living. It worked out very good with the name - The COlorado OL(online) Jew. The website ran for a couple of months and then stopped due to lack of growth. The website wasnt touched until late in October of 2007 when I got the idea to turn it in to a public Jewish site and has stayed that way since. The site layout has gone through extensive redesign. The original system was hacked in the summer of 2008 and thus we switched over to the format that we use now. Since restarting in 2007 TheCoolJew currently has over 10 active members involved with writing, pictures, videos and articles. In 2007 the site got around 1,000 monthly views and is now nearing 120,000 Monthly views. We invite are readers to share with us ways to better this site and make it better. We thank you for your support and making us what we are today!

ReplyDeletea innovative way of keeping in touch with campers into a world renowned 'kosher entertainment' web-site of which there are very few. How important this is in today's world where we have to unfortunately 'compete' with so many 'shtusim', your site clearly gives us a refreshing approach to replace all that by means of offering an alternative. M'chayl l'choyol!
