The Zohar teaches that the 13 attributes of mercy shine during the month of Elul just like Yom Kippur yet Elul isn't a month long holiday.
"During the month of Elul the King is in the field." says the Alter Rebbe.
What is required from us is to leave the desert to meet Him there!
