Protest At Construction of Kiryas Joel pipeline

Two Orange County lawmakers stood in protest today in an attempt to block construction of a controversial water pipeline project.

The Orange County Legislature had already voted to stop the water pipeline project, but Legislator Roxanne Donnery (D-14th District) says Orange County Executive Ed Diana isn't enforcing the resolution to stop construction. Donnery was joined in protest by Woodbury Supervisor John Burke as they physically blocked crews from laying down the line into Woodbury.

The pipeline project runs about 13 miles from Kiryas Joel through Harriman and into Cornwall, where it will tap into New York City's water tunnel in New Windsor. Opponents of the project are concerned there won't be enough water for both municipalities and say the proper permits with the state are not in place.

A representative for Kiryas Joel called the protest "a cheap publicity stunt." Donnery and Burke said they will continue to block construction and are willing to get arrested if that is what it takes.

Diana's office says the Legislature's resolution to stop construction is not legally binding and that construction will continue under both state and county permits.
