NYPD Rescues Two Kayakers In Jamaica Bay

On Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 1509 hours the New York City Police Department received a 911 call for two males who fell out of their kayak in Jamaica Bay.

The NYPD's Air Sea Rescue # 14, a Bell 412 helicopter, responded and located one of the kayakers, a M/W/32. Detective Brian Singer and Police Officer Marian Kopystianskyj, divers assigned to the Harbor Unit, deployed from the helicopter and retrieved the kayaker, who was taken to Floyd Bennett Field where awaiting EMS transported him to Kings County Hospital. He was treated for hypothermia. Emergency Services Unit Detective John Kenny, also heard the call of the kayakers in distress and had responded to the scene, where he observed the second kayaker, a M/W/32, swimming to a boat that was anchored in the bay. Anticipating the male would need medical attention, Detective Kenny put on his wet suit and swam 200 yards to the boat to assist that man, who also showed signs of hypothermia. NYPD Harbor Adam responded to the scene and removed the second male, with Detective Kenny, from the anchored boat and took them to shore were EMS transported both to area hospitals for hypothermia treatment. All involved were in stable condition subsequent to the rescues.
