Growing Interest in Yiddish Theater

There is a growing interest in the study and preservation of Jewish music as evidenced by climbing registration for academic programs such as the those at the Hebrew University Department of Musicology, the Jewish Music Institute in London and the Belz School of Jewish Music. Observers also note the rise in Klezmer groups and festivals which focus on Yiddish music which originated in Eastern Europe. One valuable resource for the study of Yiddish music is the Milken Archive. The Archive founded by Jewish businessman Lowell Milken, preserves and documents the Jewish music of American Jews including the music of the European Jews who began to arrive in America in large waves in the 1880s. These people brought with them a rich heritage of Yiddish culture which is captured in their music. The Archive presents a wide range of Yiddish songs and tunes, some of which are still favored in specific Jewish communities today.
