Maccabeats: Out of the Box CD Review
Hey everybody. It's your local Jewish Music critic here. I'm gonna review a CD, and you're gonna think about it, and it'll help you make up you're mind about the CD. Get it? Got it? Good. Oh,and in case your wondering, I'm reviewing the new Maccabeats CD. Please don't try to figure out who I am based on the writing style or previous posts under different name. I wish to stay anonymous. You can refer to me as "The Mai'ven, but enough about me, let's talk about our favorite acapella group (okay, at least, MY favorite acapella group)..........................The MACCABEATS!
Come Back: Our anthem. The subliminal meaning deeply touched me. The "words behind the words" as famous singer/composer Leonardo Cohen used to call them. Originally sung by the Moshav Band, the Maccabeats took an amazing song and turned it more... amazing! (4/5)
K'shehalev Bocheh: Not such a fan, but still an OK song. The Maccabeats are great at a lot of things. Imitating Israelis isn't exactly one of their great points. Sorry for all the negative views, but eh... (and no, in case you tried to guess, I'm NOT Canadian). (1/5)
Yavo: I listen, I hear, I like! Yavo shows off the Maccabeats voice talents without the use of too many machinery (sorry A.K.A Pella Platinum) Very good song! Kudos to Yerachmiel Begun! (4/5)
When You Believe: I immensely enjoyed this next track, it began by reminding me of all of the downtrodden, grieving people in the world. It quickly inspired me with the amazing lyrics. But, a little gospel-sounding. Given that it was originally sung by Gospel singers, it sounds like Gospel is about right. I am a big fan of the Hebrew bridge. Well Done. (4/5)
Modim: Nice song, has a lullaby tone pumped in there. Well done, but overly repetitive. (3.5/5)
Keep Your Head Up: My personal favorite. This song inspires me. It teaches me and most other listeners how to "breathe"!
Seriously, enough pressure... just....just....Chill! Wonderfully done. This song takes me out of any bad mood! (6/5, YES, that's a 6!)
Habeit: Great song. A remastered and reinvented Abie Rotenberg classic. Great job, you guys showed off all of your strengths when "playing the Habeit card". Nice dramatic ending. (4/5)
Rau Banim: A wonderful rendition of my personal favorite Shwekey song. At the "Shwekey at the Beacon" concert, they showed off how wonderfully they can pull off this song. I am very glad they included this on their CD. The whistle was a nice touch. (4/5)
Miracle: Just miraculous. My personal fave of their Youtube series. I know the original song and I think all of you do (hint: secret Matisyhau obsession...*gasp*). Great version of the "classical" beauty. So... what is 8 again? Oh, Right. (4/5)
Kol Berama: Absolutely perfect. In all ways. 'Nuff said...BUT, I will tell you more. This song, a perfect addition to the masterpiece that Simcha Leiner brought to the world. The song taught me that a man CAN cry. This song has a special place in my heart. That spot is marked "for a day that needs a boost of ruchniyos". (5/5)
Never Say Never: EVER! My second favorite on the CD. This song shows that we can't give up, even when faced with opposition from all sides. Many wondered why the Maccabeats would include a "Justin Bieber" song on their CD. I can tell you why. The song was just BEGGING to get the "Maccabeats Treatment". Well, the song got it. And some great beats. Well done. (5/5)
Overall, this CD recieves an 89% *.
*(So do you think you know who I am. Hint: I'm not who you think I am. No, and not that other guy.Or am I?)
