The בנות צלפחד came to משה רבינו and complained that their father died in the מדבר from his own sin, and specified that he was not a part of קרח ועדתו.

The משך חכמה says that חז"ל tell us that the בנות צלפחד were very wise, smart women. They were able to דרשן out a rather interesting הלכה in their favor, to which ה' concurred. They knew that the children of people killed via בית דין מיתת still inherit their father’s properties, while the children of someone executed for rebelling against the king lose their inheritance to the king’s dominion. משה רבינו had the status of a מלך, as חז"ל learn out from the פסוק of ויהי בישורון מלך, they therefore were quite particular and wise in their wording when they said to משה רבינו that "בחטאו מת", he died from his own sin, either from the sin of the מעפילים, those who tried to go up to ארץ ישראל without permission, or he was the מקושש עצים on שבת, and therefore his property went to his יורשים, namely, the daughters. However, if he had been in the עדת קרח, who split away from משה רבינו in order to rebel against him, he would have been considered someone who was executed by the king, and for this reason, they specified that he was killed for his own עבירות, and was very much not a part of קרח ועדתו.

אי"ה, we should all take a lesson from the בנות צלפחד to learn to be careful in the way that we speak, and that ה' should be מסכים to everything that comes out of our mouths.
