REVIEW OF YEHUDA GREENS NEW ALBUM
REVIEW OF YEHUDA GREENS NEW ALBUM
The wait is over! After a little more than three years, Yehuda Green has put out another smash hit of an album. Featuring musical compositions by himself and R’ Shlomo Carlebach, זצ"ל, this will make a great addition to any musical library.
The album kicks off with an exciting new niggun, Hashiveinu, which is sure to please. Apparently the niggun itself was composed by Yehuda during a private kumzitz in Williamsburg after a request to teach a new niggun, and he delivered quite well.
This album also features a brand new Yiddish song, “Yearning-געגועים”, the lyrics written by none other than Lipa Schmeltzer, and the melody co-composed by Lipa and Yehuda Green together. The song is about Yehuda’s having grown up in the streets of Meah Shearim, going with his Zaydie to the קברות of Rachel Imeinu, Dovid Hamelech, and Shimon Hatzadik. According to Aaron Zutler, Yehuda’s manager, when Yehuda saw the finished lyrics, there were tears in his eyes from the flood of his beautiful childhood memories that instantly came flowing back to him.
Yehuda delivers a beautiful rendition of one of my all-time favorite R’ Shlomo Carlebach songs, “Mimkomcha.” Not the classic, familiar Mimkomcha that is often sung Friday night to V'shomru B'nei Yisroel, but rather his less-frequently used, yet equally, if not more beautiful, Chazzanish version. When I heard this song playing on my brand new CD, I was very excited, and Yehuda did an incredible job with it.
Following the enormous popularity and success of “R’ Shlomo’s Kiddush” from the first album, Yehuda comes back again with a gorgeous and "heartzigeh" Havdalah. It begins with a heart-piercing and meaningful Tefillah- Gut Funn Avrohom, written by Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev. The nusach was composed by Yehuda himself and his brother Pinchas, after which he transitions beautifully into “R’ Shlomo’s Havdala.” You can almost hear R’ Shlomo himself singing this beautiful melody to the ancient Bracha, and I am sure Shabbatons everywhere will be using this tune very quickly, if not already.
My other personal favorite on this album is R’ Shlomo’s “Hodu Lashem”. This fast-paced song is sure to keep you singing and dancing even well after the track ends. I’d suggest just playing it on repeat to make the amazing ruach last on and on.
The CD itself is an excellent second album, arranged and produced by Yehuda himself, and presented by Aaron Zutler. It is sure to please the Carlebach-style lover, both young and old, and will make an excellent afikoman present for anybody.
Yehuda- we can't wait for your next album, we’re mamish “yearning” for it to come out!
